Lamu tourism: Residents approve seafront beautification project

By |

Their reasons include the potential to attract more local and international tourists, thereby creating opportunities for their businesses to thrive.

Lamu residents have overwhelmingly endorsed a new seafront beautification project aimed at enhancing the coastal town's aesthetic appeal and tourism potential.

The initiative is a significant stride towards promoting tourism and preserving the area's natural charm for years to come.

Thus far, Lamu County has successfully conducted public consultations, promising a treasure trove for tourists by blending stunning landscapes with the rich history and culture of the islands.

The project, which includes plans for landscaping, promenades, and recreational areas along the coastline, received enthusiastic support from local communities during the consultations with the public. It is expected to preserve Lamu's cultural heritage while promoting environmental sustainability along the picturesque shoreline.

Residents expressed excitement at the prospect of the revitalised seafront, which they believe will attract more visitors and provide economic opportunities for businesses in the area.

“It is a great initiative that will see Lamu County sold to the world. I believe Lamu has a cultural heritage that needs to be shared with the world, so by doing this, we will be attracting tourists both locally and internationally. The more tourists we get, the better because our businesses will thrive as well,” said Lali Issa.

Another resident, Nyabwana Ahmed, urged the county government to include youths in the project so they can earn some income from it.

“Our boys are at home jobless; I hope the project will give them a place to get some income into their pockets. By doing this, they can sustain themselves for a while instead of spending time at home,” she said.

Local businessman, Mohamed Athman, said, "I believe our city will be clean. I am not saying it is not, but such projects present a plan to ensure the city maintains its cleanliness."

The project to be implemented at the seafront of King Fahd Hospital entails the development of both indoor and outdoor areas, featuring amenities such as a restaurant, a restroom, a playground, and a wooden bridge.

Governor Issa Timamy, who led the public engagement effort, said the county will collaborate with UN-Habitat in fulfilling the project.

Governor Timamy emphasised Lamu's status as a well-known tourist destination, hence his desire to enhance its appeal to visitors.

"I extend my gratitude to the residents of Lamu for supporting this initiative. Once completed, the authentic essence of Lamu will be showcased," he said, adding they expect to finish the work within the year.
